Planning Your First Artifact Build, Step by Step

A step-by-step way to plan an artifact build: choose a goal, pick a container, cover infection, fill the remaining slots by role and check the result, with the mistakes that most often ruin a first build.

This guide explains mechanics that the Artifact Optimizer uses. Open it in another tab to try them on your own gear.

Open the Artifact Optimizer

A good artifact build starts from a goal, not from the artifacts you happen to own. This guide walks through the order of decisions that works for most players, using the mechanics explained in the other guides.

Step 1: decide what the build is for

Write down one main goal before you look at artifacts:

  • Survive gunfights: bullet resistance and vitality first.
  • Move fast: movement speed, running speed and stamina.
  • Carry loot: carry weight and stamina.
  • Stay out longer: health regeneration, periodic healing and healing effectiveness.

Mixing goals is fine, but one of them should decide every close call.

Step 2: pick the container

The container sets your budget:

  • More slots mean more stats and more downsides.
  • Higher effectiveness boosts every beneficial stat, but not purges or downsides.
  • Higher inner protection lets you carry more hazardous artifacts.

For a combat build, effectiveness usually matters most. For a build that leans on hazardous artifacts, inner protection does.

Step 3: plan the infection first

Most strong artifacts carry an infection downside. Decide how you will keep each meter under control before you fill the slots:

  • Purge artifacts cancel accumulation from other artifacts. Hard counters such as Atom purge several infections and carry no hazard of their own.
  • Hybrid counters such as Veiner, Timber or Onion combine a combat or carry stat with a purge, usually with a smaller hazard of another type.
  • Inner protection reduces whatever positive total is left.

The Artifact Optimizer keeps net accumulation at or below 0.5 for the four main infections and 0 for frost by default. Those limits are the tool's starting point, not a game rule; you can change them.

Step 4: fill the remaining slots by role

Now add artifacts for your goal. Examples by role from the current data:

  • Survivability: bullet resistance artifacts such as Rose, Cursed Rose, Scallop or Prism; vitality from Magma, Black Hole or Fossil.
  • Sustain: Fossil and Heart for periodic healing; Sun and Bismuth for health regeneration.
  • Speed: Battery, Comet, Rattle or Golden Prima.
  • Carry weight: Egg, Prima, Spiral or Golden Prima.

Check every downside as you add an artifact. A vitality penalty on a speed artifact (Spiral, Raisin) costs EHP, and zone-protection artifacts such as Mirror or Eye of the Storm all carry a vitality downside.

Step 5: check the result

  • Add the build to the Build Calculator and look at EHP, effective stability, speed and the infection totals after inner protection.
  • Change one artifact at a time and watch which number moves.
  • Remember that upgrades raise beneficial stats by up to 30% at +15 but never change downsides.

Mistakes that ruin first builds

  • Ignoring frost. Frost is never reduced by inner protection, and some containers add frost of their own.
  • Stacking one infection type and hoping inner protection covers it. It reduces the total; it does not remove it.
  • Comparing artifacts at different rolls. A 175% roll is 1.75 times the base; compare like with like.
  • Counting on additional stats you have not unlocked. One slot opens at +5, two at +10, three at +15.

Let the tools search for you

Once you know your goal and container, the Artifact Optimizer can search the combinations for you and rank them by survival time against a chosen weapon or by speed. Its results are strong candidates to test in the Build Calculator, not a promise that nothing better exists.
